A golden-plated AK-47 rifle has been found among an arsenal of weapons seized in Honduras. The gun is encrusted with diamonds and emeralds. Police say it belonged to the founder of the La Resistencia cartel, Ramiro Pozos Gonzalez. Posession of gaudy weapons has become something of a status symbol in the bloody narcotics war that has ravaged parts of Mexico since President Felipe Calderon declared a crackdown on the drug lords six years ago.

The gold-plated weapon was found during a raid at an abandoned ranch in the central country of Honduras, a key route for drugs to reach the US from South America.
